Why is it that strategy games maps either too big or too small?

Take Total War 2...the map size being, the size of Europe.

Then there's Stellaris where you can basically have a galaxy...it's weird :/

I think that's what I liked most about Civilisation. Choose your own map size!

@GlassDog: I don't know. I'm not into VR personally, especially not for 4x. Though I could definitely see that for a game like The Long Dark.

@Xuan12: It's pretty good for things like space traders / combat / driving games. Less good for a traditional 4x, though, I agree.

I used to love the Europa Universalis franchise, but I can't justify it anymore against Paradox's cash-grab DLC spam strategy.

Yeah the total war stuff doesn't really scale up, past Medieval, from my experience.
