I Am a Caregiver

Great grandfather got caught reaching for his wheelchair. I put his wheelchair on the opposite side of the room.

His 85 year old self got down to the very edge of the end of his bed, stretched out as far as he could and reached out for the chair. Easily his full body length away. So that he can sneak around, do whatever all night and complain about being tired tomorrow.

My dad and I hear something from his room. We go in to check on him and enter mid-stretch (I'm not strong enough to lift him alone, we thought he had fallen). He flails himself backwards, hit his back on the wall and tried to pretend he was laying down asleep. Lamp on and everything, chair knocker over on the floor.

And this is why he is no longer allowed to have his wheelchair in his room at night. He's fine but he's worse than a child sometimes.

For those not in the loop:
He does not have alzheimers or dementia, a question I often get.

Side note:
He claims one arm is essentially useless. Funny, he was using it just fine while he was putting himself in harm's way. Just another bill for us to pay, no worries. Not his problem until we can't afford jelly for his toast.
