I Am a Caregiver

My great grandmother has maybe two weeks left of her life.
Overnight she rapidly got worse, can’t hold herself up and refuses to eat food. She’s struggling to breathe. I had to figure out how to gently make her take medicine, blended her food so she would take it.
She’s panicking, she’s confused and she’s weak.
This is hard. I’m doing my best to console her and help her through this but I don’t feel like it’s enough.
Gave her medicine to calm her down and help her breathe.
Funeral arrangements are being made in advance.
Only two of her seven daughters have visited to see her before she passes. I’m terribly disappointed in some of the others, as they have the time and the money to see her. They won’t even call to ask about her well-being, knowing her health is poor and only getting worse.
They were more concerned with taking her stuff before she died. One of them went so far as to rob her safe full of cash and jewelry days before my family and I were able to help. As soon as we arrived that daughter ran far from us, and we found my grandmother on deaths door. That was two years ago.
My grandmother was a hard worker. Never off her feet. She was a barber, loved to cook and loved her grandchildren. Her life was hard but she did the best she could and cherished her family.
Having watched her decline and helped her through this entire endeavor, I will not be attending her funeral.
Her husband also lives with us, he doesn’t need as much care as she does. I worry he will take her death very hard. They were always very co-dependent. My father will help him through that, as they are closer than I ever was to him. Hopefully he will not give up, he is already struggling to cope with her declining health.

The only point to posting this is to get some thoughts off my mind.

That's a very hard situation to be in, and as I am reading I can tell you care very much. Your great grandmother will appreciate your help and when she passes she will watch over you. Your a great person to be there by her side. Shame to the others that have neglected one of their own, and for the one that robbed , well that's a ugly thing to do.. we all know karmas a b. Your grandmother sounds like she lived her life giving to others , she sounds like a wonderful soul. I hope you and your family get through this together, and when it's her time she will be in peace. I'm sorry that its hard to witness her suffer but when time passes all will be well. God bless. And thank you for sharing. Life is to be cherished and what your doing for your grandmother is admirable.

Be there just for the love of her.
I was there for my gramdmother and she kissed my hands. I can’t describe what that kiss did for me. Our love is what makes the difference when they about to leave us.

I am sorry. That is so difficult to watch. You can feel good knowing that you did all that you could for her.
