Do you remember using a pay phone?

Yes, right back to the rotary-dial and Pay-On-Answer system.

I think they started to be replaced (in Britain) by press-button phones, but still POA, in the early 1970s, along with the replacement of Strowger-system automatic telephone exchanges with fully-electronic versions.

Public pay-telephone kiosks still exist, but are very few and far between now, and I think all use bank cards rather than cash.

Even before them, the Royal Automobile Club and the Automobile Association had closed down their own road-side kiosk networks they had operated for decades, for their paid-up so-called "members'" emergency and breakdown use.

They still exist in some places. I saw one in Plymouth, Massachusetts outside a Convenience Store. There was a guy outside trying to beg change from people...said he had to call his drug dealer...er.....mother.
Yep.

You don't have to think it funny. There's lots and lots of stuff I don't understand either.@MarmeeMarch

This brings up an unfortunate event of years ago.

Us older people remember Lily Tomlin's early 70s Earnestine skits on Laugh-in. She also did stage performances which unfortunately were pretty raw by comparison.

We attended one of her stage performances, thinking it would be "Laugh-in" type comedy and brought out of town guest which included 12 and 13 year old kids. We exited within the 1st 5 minutes after two or three F-word bombs, and heavy sexual content.

While her performance may have measured up to 2019 HBO adult comedy, it was pretty far out for the early 70s.
@Heartlander Yes. The Mirror Had Two Faces. Sounds uncomfortable and disappointing.
Absolutely. And rotary dial phones. Not smoke signals though...

@PoetryNEmotion I had a rotary dial phone until 1998. I didn't have a cell phone until 2014.
@Byron8by7 Hi, hon. My mom had one up until she died about 6 years ago. And I just have had a cell since last July.

I loved when you would talk longer than your money took you - then hung up and the phone would ring and the operator would say you owe more money. That always struck me as funny as hell.
I didn't much, but yeah. And was thinking about songs that reference them the other day.. anachronisms now.
Yes... but, then again, it was only 7 years ago when i last used one, so not that hard to remember...

I never needed to call someone enough that I had to use one.
toddr13 · 46-50, M
Yes, I do. There are few of them these days, but some do exist.

I didn't get a cellphone until 2000, so yeah
Absolutely. I remember having a pager and needing to find a pay phone to return calls from the job while on the road.
Byron8by7 · M
