Was mathematic discovered or invented?

I want to hear your opinion
Faust76 · 46-50, M
Yes and no.
Generally speaking, you'd get "different" mathematics with different starting axioms; we just decided on some set to use.
Or like ancient cultures, who did not yet have the concept of zero, and had to design their mathematics and logic around it. (Oddly enough a recent study purpoted to show that bees have a concept of zero)
Of course, that's somewhat obvious when you consider that "Mathematics is the language of nature". The analogy to language is not perfect, because in language for example, we indeed invented one way or other what "evil" for example is.
What mathematics describes seems to be more or less immutable laws of nature that have and are being discovered. Mathematics is an invented (and oftentimes imperfect) language to describe them.

Invented. I guess if you believe in some kind of theism then you could make the argument that it was discovered. It would be a terrible argument but you could make it nonetheless.
@TheJudgerNautSquared What do numbers have to do with theism ? One needn’t believe in a deity to be able to count. 🤔

Mathematics is a representation and quantification of the material and conceptual, so the only way that it could have been "discovered" is if it had existed before man. Many creationists claim that because there is a logical model that can be applied to demonstrate and predict how the world works, the creator must have used some form of mathematic model in it's creation. Mathematics doesn't exist outside of the human mind, so it had to be invented.

It was invented as civilization evolved and trade developed. As transactions became higher and more complicated, a system was needed to be developed in order to better manage them. It would, of course, go on to other areas only furthering civilization.

Mathematics is a symbolic logic, a human language for describing observed patterns/systems that are discovered.

Now that language just like all others have an innate basis. Even animals can count to a degree.

History has shown different numerical scales were developed in different societies. The laws of mathematics have always been the same though.
Discovered...first was Jesus

Idk I think it slowly evolved

Counting on fingers = base 10

An excellent philosophical question. A bit of both I think. Perhaps it was invented as a framework to explore and understand the world. But it has certainly led to so many fascinating discoveries both about the world and about the properties of numbers themselves.

If it had been discovered then it must have been invented.
Why do you want opinions?
Discovered, I believe. Items have always existed in amounts, but we haven’t always been around to observe them or define such equations.
