I Am Waiting For The Apocalypse

I am just listening to an interview with Rebecca Solnit's "Paradise Built in Hell" her 2010 book on the topic of our fascination with disaster and apocalypse and "the purposeful joy that fills human beings in the face of disasters"

She declares that many of us "love certainty more than hope" and thereby "seize on bitter, despondent narratives that are they know exactly what’s going to happen".

She not only talks about the morbid fascination that many of us engage in but also the allure of "disaster convergence" which describes the human tendency to rise to the occasion in a disaster and show our best selves.

I'm just sayin'

I never had the "duck and cover" drills in gradeschool everyone else our age range seemed to, but when my peers whine about how lame that was, I point out the facts of our only "live test" in Nagasaki and Japan where one person was killed via full-body third degree burns standing next to another with only peripheral burns because they were shadowed by a telephone pole!

I no longer look forward to "the apocalypse"... I just don't have the focused energy I used to. And besides I am slowly building an off-grid lifestyle and don't NEED an apocalypse to find my own self-sufficiency and engaged, meaningful tasks every day (e.g. chop wood/carry water)
