I Have Saved Someones Life

In my line of work it's just something that happens, my favorite memory was my second year with the department. We went out on a car accident call, an elderly lady was pinned in the car. I covered her with my coat as the vehicle was on fire, I held her hand and told her we would get her out safe while my team tried to cut her out of the crumpled wreck. She was over come from the smoke and fumes and stopped breathing, so I gave her rescue breathing as the team got her free before the car was engulfed in flames. I was so scared that she would not recover, but in the ambulance she opened her eyes, squeezed my hand and thanked me.
Each year on the anniversary of the accident she brings the department a plate of heart shaped cookies and gives all of us a hug, even those who weren't present on that day.
It makes me smile as I write this...
