This story sounds familiar to me, except I am the aunt in your story. Just know that the times you spent with your aunt were probably very special to her. She may have been trying to make up for your dad in the beginning but I would almost bet she got very attached to you. I'm sorry you didn't get to know your father. My niece doesn't know her father at all.

I am sorry you feel this sadness or sense of loss, but I think the key thought is in your last sentence "I mourn the man I wish he was".
You know he never was the man you wanted him to be, and probably never would have made you completely happy, perhaps always disappointing you and his grandchild. Maybe deep down he knew this.
