I Believe In Being Kind
Seriously. How difficult is it to not be an a-hole towards other humans? I feel very fortunate that my ex-wife helped train me to be a kinder person, in response to her angry hate rants towards me. I found that engaging in the same did nothing to advance an argument, while "killing her with kindness" disarmed her and, over time, led to a much more civil relationship.
That was many years ago.
Today, I make a conscious effort to be kind to everyone I encounter - knowing that they may be fighting battles of which I have no knowledge. Even when someone lashes out at me, or is just rude in general, I still respond with kindness.
This is not to say that I maintain contact with these individuals - quite the contrary, in fact. If I give someone a chance, and all they do is feed negative energy into my life, I cut that off as soon as possible. If they figure it out and make amends (or even an effort along those lines), I'm all for reconciliation.
If they don't?
I'm already down the road towards more positive connections.
