Does the first year of a decade count as part of it?

Some just refer to it as transitional year.
SW-User
That's people just trying to be politically correct. A decade is 10 years, not 9 lol.

@bijouxbroussard Make the same backwards till you will find yourself counting the "first" decade as years:

0000
0001
0002
0003
0004
0005
0006
0007
0008
0009

And so, for doint it, includding the inexistent 0 year.
If you take it as ordinals (first year, second year…)

0001 (as 1st of the decade)
0002
0003
0004
0005
0006
0007
0008
0009
0010 (as the last one includded in same 1st decade)
@CharlieZ I don’t accept it in that regard. While the year 0 doesn’t exist, the years 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 do. The 60s start at 60.

@bijouxbroussard Well, I could say that if we agree that there was not a 0 year, to count 10 years for the first decade, the year 10 had to be the 10th, so part of the first one.
But, of course, it´s only technical, a thing of mathematicians and historians.
I also use to define the 60´s as you do, dear friend.
Together with the 70´s, great decades!
(and I had hair at the top of my head by those years) 😁

The first year of a decade obviously counts as part of it....the question is what year do you start (and end) the decade.
Does it run from XXX0 to XXX9....or does it run from XXX1 to XXY0?
The argument for the earlier is that this decade is the 2010s (running from 2010 to 2019), and the next decade would be the 2020s (running from 2020 to 2029).
The argument for the latter is that the first year is year 1 (not year 0), so the first decade would have run from year 1 to year 10 and this decade should run from 2011 to 2020.
Yes. 2010 - 2019 that's ten years.
We were discussing this...
I know that the first baby born Jan 1, 2000 was considered having been born in the 21st century. There was even a story about twins born in “two different centuries” because one was born Dec 31, 1999 and the other, Jan 1, 2000.*
Incidentally, I was born Jan 1, 1960, and am considered to be born in the Sixties.

@bijouxbroussard Well that is very interesting. Born only one day apart, but considered to be born in different centuries. I never thought of that.

@bijouxbroussard Centuries are a different story... The "first century" is from year 1 (there's no year "0") until year 100 (century, cent=one hundred), so the second century goes from the year 101 to 200... etc etc so 2000 is the last year of the 20th century and the 21st century is from the year 2001 onward...

But people don't talk in terms of "the first decade", "second decade" etc. It's the "1970s", the "1860s", etc., so decades include the first number ending in zero (1980 is part of the 1980s), unlike the centuries...

Having said that, no one really cares... 2000 became "the first year of the century" and the "first year of the millennium" (also technically wrong) just because everyone kept saying it without giving much thought...

I would say so. Yet there is always those that are insistent purists!

When does .9͞9͞9͞ actually become 1? 😈
VeronicaPrincess · 61-69
In a way it seems messed up, but if you take a step back it's not - 1-10 is one decade, 11-20 is the next.
bookerdana · M
Yep-we'll soon be in the roaring twenties!
@bookerdana We're going back in time? 😮😂
bookerdana · M
@latinbutterfly The Roarin'🤣 20s for the twenty first century, like tthis but NOT like this!

It may be transitional, but technically it is part of the decade...

2020 through 2029 will be 10 years known as the 20s....no?
Does the first year of your life or marriage count???
Tomorrow · 56-60, F
It is transitional of course but a decade is 10. It counts.
Pfuzylogic · M
You mean I’m not really 60
rckt148 · 61-69, M
would it be a deca with only 9
tallpowerhouseblonde · 31-35, F
Yes.The first year of this decade was 2010,as in at the end of 2010 the first year was complete.Same with the century which began on the 1st day of 2000 at midnight.
gregloa · 61-69, M
When you count to ten you don’t start with zero do you?
Zero is a number.
