Is there such a thing as a passing lane?

[c=#BF6900]Here in the U.S. the left lanes are typically for those passing the slower drivers.


Unfortunately, there are bunches and bunches of people who dont agree resulting in all lanes blocked by drivers going approx. the same speed.

Some states fine you for cruising in the left lane. I think it depends on how bored the cop is.

My state we passed a law making it illegal to stay in the left lane. It's strictly for passing only.

Highway Patrol, can technically issue a ticket if you use the left lane for anything other than passing.

That said, it would be nearly impossible, for a Patrol car to reach you, if you're stuck on 405, anywhere between Bothell in Renton, between 6-11 and 1-6 on any given day.

It's a pet peeve of mine. If I get in that lane and am slowly overtaking the vehicle in the right I'll speed up to get out of the left lane sooner so other traffic can travel faster if they wish.

Happens in Canada as well, really comes down to uneducated drivers. It is far too easy to get a license and once you do, as long as nothing happens, you don't have to be retested ever.

@CC67219 I've spent most of the past 15 years on the roads in Canada and the US, in that times I have seen so many things. I really believe it is all about them not knowing that they are to stay in the right lane unless they are passing someone and that the left lane is for passing only. A lot of people don't even know how to signal correctly though, along with a lot of other mistakes people make while driving. So, my only conclusion is they just don't know any better. I don't like to think that there are that many people purposely trying to upset others while driving.

I agree you should stay out of the left lane unless you're passing. But there are sometimes when you need to get in it early just to be able to make it into a left-turn-only lane at an intersection.
