Why do some people say, “To put it bluntly” when they speak the truth?

Are you trying to be better than us?
When a vet said, “To put it very bluntly, sometimes the best way is to put a suffering animal is to put it to sleep. Not going to sugarcoat it, it means to kill it. I was horrified!!!
How can vets be so brutal? And doctors?
Meanies.

What are putting something bluntly means to give it to you as it is. Maybe he could’ve been a bit more tactful
