I Used to Get the Cane At School

The cane was awful!!

I hated the cane and being sent for it was a wholly frightful experience. It was made far because by having to take your "execution slip" as we called it, to the secretary first to make an appropriate time if you were unlucky enough for the Headmistress not be immediately available. The smirk on her face was more than just humiliating as she would call through and say "shirley xxxxxxxx is here with a teacher's note".

It did not mean one would necessarily be caned, that depended partly one's record and offence but mainly on her mood I am sure! I would go into her study praying she were in a reasonable mood because if not I knew I would be leaving her study with my bottom on fire and with marks that would last for some time. That resulted in another pet hate, going to PE or games with cane marks on my bottom and especially in the showers afterwards.

If I did get caned then I would have to take the note back to the secretary so that she could make an entry into the punishment book. I have never knew anybody that was caned on their hands but she would ask "were you caned on your bottom or hands", my face would grow as red as my bottom as I answered between sobs.

@Sharon There were always secretaries like that and one who tried her best to be involved or tried to watch when I was being caned. That was what the punishment slip system induced.

@miscreant6x6 Wow! Have you written about this? At our school we had the most stunning blonde secretary who was actually very sympathetic and would give us boys a friendly smile or even wink if we had been swished.

@Disciplinarian She sounds delightful. Mine was a mature but attractive lady who always seemed excited when a boy arrived who was clearly due for a caning from the Head. When she took you through to his study she would always exit leaving the door ajar so she could listen to proceedings. Upon going out she would always comment on how many strokes you'd received.

@miscreant6x6 Wow, a shame you could not meet her in later life, perhaps? Did you ever look round to see her watching, then, or specific observations/comments she made proved she had?

@Disciplinarian I was rather pre-occupied when it came to observing if she was watching ! But there were comments made that told m she'd either observed or been listening VERY intently. Such as 'that 5th was particularly nasty', or 'my, he laid them on' or 'the overlays are really cruel aren't they'. All with a devilish smirk. Would love to have met her in later life.

@Sharon I taught at a boys’ prep school for a term between leaving school and going up to university. One morning in the staff room, the matron reported that a certain boy had been caned the previous evening. She had a lascivious smirk on her face as she spoke. No doubt she had had the pleasure of taking the boy to the headmaster and perhaps observing his punishment.

@MartinII Was it such an event that a boy had been caned the previous evening ? I'd have thought it almost commonplace as it was in my boarding school. Though, to be fair, it was more often the house prefects delivering pre-nocturnal beatings in the library.

@miscreant6x6 During the term I taught there I knew of only the one caning I have described, and one slippering of a boy in my class. No doubt there were others, but I don’t think very many. The age range was 8-13. No prefect canings, as there might have been in secondary boarding schools.
