I Am A Strict Mom

As the summer is winding down I thought it might be nice to share how things went for me and my family using an idea I got from another mom at church.

The idea was to set up some structure for the kids during the summer so they don't just totally run wild and also to help keep their minds sharp for the coming school year. And I will say it has worked out fantastically.

How it worked was in addition to the standard house rules about curfew and bedtime as well as the time I wanted the kids up and out of bed we also set them tasks they needed to finish on a weekly basis. For the older kids they had volunteer hours they had to finish per week as well as time spent reading and doing bible study. The younger kids had time they had to spend doing chores just helping out around the house and of course reading and bible study for them too. As a family there were daily and weekly caps on electronic usage and they had to spend so many hours per day outside if possible.

It really worked and they were kept busy and focused and overall I am pleased that they seemed to have spent the summer learning things not just being lazy.

It sounds like a most productive summer

@isabelrider I agree. It was productive which was nice

@Kathryn05 during the long holidays, children often suffer due to the lack of routine. It sounds to me that you imposed routine and structure into the girls' summer.

@beckychandler Thanks Becky and it really did work out. The interesting part was that the kids were much less prone to getting into trouble during the week as they had less free time to find trouble. What did happen though was the kids never really learned that when I said 5 hours a week helping and volunteering I meant 5 hours!

@Kathryn05 excellent strategy ...so they needed no spanking at all during the whole summer season ? That's very impressive
Kathryn05 · 41-45, F
@kuttya Oh they needed spankings sure they're not robots and they make mistakes. And at times the list of chores led to rebellion and plans subvert my authority but overall they were much better behaved this summer than the last one

I will keep that in mind for next summer. We did a family trip and the kids have been to camp after that as well. So it has been quite a busy time for them so far. They will be back in school early September so we still have a few weeks were they can be a bit lazy

Most I agree on but forcing your religious beliefs on them is not one of them. Bible study isn't a thing you force on someone that will guarantee they will reject it. Good luck in reigning them in when they're older and hellions.

Some children do very well with a lot of structure. Others find it confining. It looks like your kids are in the former category, and good for them (and you)!
