Should I have to be on social media for my job if I am not comfortable with it?

I work at a library as a children's programmer. I do all of the programming for children (as the name infers). I do storytimes, ukulele classes (which is actually for adults and children), teen and middle school game day. I also plan and track down sponsors for our yearly summer reading program (which is national program across America incorporated by CSLP). My boss has been asking a lot of demands from me lately. I also work as a fulltime student a university, and I was working full time here until she finally, but reluctantly reduced my hours. Now, she is requiring me to promote and run our social media sites, which I am not comfortable with. I don't even use social media. And I barely even know how to. She wants me to start posting myself on videos doing book chats for children and singing on the ukulele, and just stuff I don't feel comfortable with. I don't want to be on social media and I never have. And I don't feel like I should have too. But, she is not really giving me much of a choice. What should I do?

Seems like it's beyond your job description. Usually they'll hire people who know how to do pr.

Really depends on your employment contract.

[c=#4C0073] If you don't want to do that then you shouldn't have to. I wouldn't feel comfortable posting videos with myself in them either. That should go to a person who enjoys social media and has experience. [/c]

She is trying to promote the services at the library and have the public familiarize themselves with you. Perhaps working for the public library isn’t for you?

@Keepitsimple Working at the library is perfect for me, but social media is not.

So how will anybody know when looking at the site what is offered if you don’t help to promote it or yourself?@Saucylover

Limit your involvement in social media strictly to work related items.

I had a former boss ask me for my passwords to my email account.
So I changed them to "fuckyouasshole", then opened new accounts elsewhere.

I would explain to her that you're not comfortable with it, and see what she says.
It's illegal to force you to go on social media.
Depends on how long you want to stay there, and if you want to advance. Also, find out if it’s part of the job requirement, because even if you someday leave the job, that will be out there and their property. If it isn’t something the contract indicated you might be asked to do, you might have a stronger basis for refusing.

You're using social media to ask this question.
Saucylover · 26-30, F
@MethDozer Yes, but I do not post videos or anything on here that I am not comfortable with. This is the only social media site I use. I do not use facebook, instagram, snapchat, and twitter. All of which she wants me to use and post videos of myself on.

@Saucylover She wants you to run the library SM. Not your own personal life SM.
