Does shiftwork form the basis on which your life is structured and how does it affect you ?

I work shiftwork as a train driver (what in the US is called an 'engineer'). Been doing it for over 30 yrs. Being a full 24/7/365 operation with start/finish times that are never the same day-to-day there's basically no such thing as a social life, and it makes dating, making friends, and building romantic relationships very difficult. I live on my own, and don't own my own home. I've had two long-term relationships that have collapsed partly due to doing shiftwork.

Do you do a shiftwork job and have you been doing it basically all your working life?

How does it affect your work/life balance, and do you still have any sort of social life?

Do you do it purely for the extra money associated with not being a mon-fri office-hrs-only job or because you actually like the work and the money is secondary?
It effects everything, yes. It's the pits. Glad I don't do that anymore. I feel for ya. I've always wanted to be what you are though. lol That is so cool!!

Oh you poor guy! No time off ever? Holidays I would think? You get little breaks I guess and meal breaks. So you are stuck on the train! Trains are wonderful but I can sympathize being confined that much and not having a social life. I was a caregiver for 13 years 24/7 and it's rough. The toughest job I've ever known. He was a difficult case and back breaking to say the least.
Is it true you have a spare knuckle that weighs 75lbs and have to walk it back yourself to the car that separated?

Is that a freight train or passenger train that you operate?
