Employee calls boss to ask for this week's hrs. Boss hangs up, then..

Employee texts for the hrs the next day, and gets a cryptic 'see you at the grill on Friday' response. Employee texts back twice to ask whether he was to work on Wed or Thu, with no response.

I'm assuming the employee does the payroll and the boss is paid hourly or daily and isn't exempt?

If the above is the case, and he hasn't turned in his hours/days worked, treat him the way you would any other employee that doesn't turn in their hours. No paycheck. He only has himself to blame. You have his obnoxious responses in texts to back you up if he pitches a fit.

@SW-User Thx for the comments. I think the boss is being a jerk by refusing to communicate better.

@purplepen The boss sounds like he's a control freak and gets off on messing with people because he knows he can get away with it.

Tell the guy to find another job and not quit this one. When the boss finally calls him, he can say he thought from the lack of response that he was laid off so he found another job. He'll leave the boss in a spot having to find someone else to cover. Maybe it'll teach the boss a lesson.

@SW-User He might end up doing that. Thx for the suggestion.
Maybe the employee should go in and check the schedule

@Pinkstarburst If there were a written schedule, he would for sure.
@purplepen Then I don’t know. Sorry he’s dealing with this.

I HOPE I'm wrong but he may not be working there and the boss wannts to tell him face-to facd😰
Is this a riddle

@DarlingSelah It's a real life situation but it seems like a riddle to me.

Sounds like obviously you don’t have work until the grill on friday

Then it sounds like a test. Be more proactive. @purplepen

@GardenSage This turned out to be the case.

@purplepen did you pass?

I would remind said employer that he can easily be reported to the labor department. And with evidence to boot. Then I would find another job.
