I Love My Parents

I love my parents so much: more than anything else in this world. I sometimes feel like I’m the reason they’re falling out and arguing though. My dad always reasons with me and takes my side when I argue with my mum, which then causes her to fall out with him. If I stay out late, my mum tells me it’s irresponsible, but my dad tells her that I’m free to stay out and have fun if I want to. If I stay the night at a friend’s house, my mum assumes the worst: she thinks that I sleep with everybody who isn’t a female, which is extremely frustrating. My dad however, is happy for me to spend the night with one of my male friends if I want to. If I buy and wear a dress that’s “too short” or “too tight” in my mum’s personal opinion, I have to take it off and wear something “more respectful.” My dad’s response is always the same: “don’t listen to her, get changed when you get there.”

I love them both to pieces, but I don’t want to stop having fun to stop them arguing. I need my mum to accept that I’m 18 and that I’m mature and old enough to make my own choices about what I wear and who I spend my time with.

I think it's wonderful that you express your love for your parents, a lot of kids don't at your age...a lot of conflict in those years between kids and their parents. I would cut your mom some slack though. She comes at you from the perspective of being a woman, which your dad can't possibly do. It took me a long time to realize that my mom was a little harder on me for that reason and I needed to trust her and her experience/wisdom. You're always going to be her little girl no matter how old you are. Maybe just try to be a little more patient with her and her "opinions." Sounds like you're a respectful daughter to your parents and that's awesome. Best to you as you transition into an independent young woman. 🙂

@Focus Thanks for sharing. Sounds like you're handling things with much respect to your parents and that's what is most important. They raised a great young woman. 😌

Kids always seem to blame themselves for their parents issues. You have to realize that they are adults, and thereby responsible for their own behavior...
