Have you ever been to Venice and can you confirm this ?

Apparently it is illegal to sit down in public unless you are in someone's shop buying something. Like coffee in a cafe.
It's even more illegal to sit down and eat your own food in public.

According to a news story I read 2 German tourists who recently were brewing their own coffee outside in public were given a $1000 fine and asked to leave the city.

You are allowed to sit down in Venice if you sit where seats at provided. They are indeed fining people for lying or sitting on the ground though. This particular couple were brewing their own coffee using a camping stove on the steps of a historic bridge.

My personal opinion is that Venice is overcrowded, cramped and dirty and having been there I certainly wouldn't go back anyway.

@QuixoticSoul DUDE!

Venice is lovely if you know how to enjoy it. It can be miserable trying to fight through the crowds.

I rarely take in the tourist spots in Venice. I like to find the hidden gems that scare people away.

My wife and I had lunch at a little place where they barely spoke English, and it was wonderful. There was one other couple (and older Italian couple) in the place, so it was like we had personalized service.

There are also ways to enjoy Venice without breaking the bank (though it's not easy).

I would recommend against camping on the Rialto though. lol

@JoeyFoxx Yeah, honestly we had an absolutely lovely time. Our hotel was totally awesome - bizarrely affordable, yet within a few steps of San Marco on a eerily quiet alley. We also got lucky with the food, found some quiet museums, etc - it was a great stop, and Venice still has that miraculous ability to generate romance out of thin air. Yeah, there are a lot of people. But there is a reason for that.

@QuixoticSoul Ok, thanks for that info and the lovely pics. I appreciate it.

I believe the rule about sitting down is spreading through Italy. Last week Rome introduced a ban on sitting on the Spanish Steps for any reason. Uncontrolled tourism may be a thing of the past.

Naturally my own tourist behaviour is perfectly reasonable, it's just all the other people who are an issue getting in my way and spoiling everything. 😇

It depends on where you sit.

Venice has many narrow thoroughfares and sitting anywhere other than a campo (square) is problematic.

Venice isn’t typically friendly to tourists who aren’t actually tourists.

Traditionally, even back packers have known that visiting a city meant being respectful, keeping your things tied up and having a coffee at a cafe.

Venice becomes impossibly crowded during the height of tourist season and when urban hikers come in without plans to spend money and participate in the economy, they ruin it for everyone.
Wraithorn · 51-55, M
@JoeyFoxx Thanks for that. So possibly those German tourists were causing an obstruction and being inconsiderate.
JoeyFoxx · 51-55, M
@Wraithorn From the pictures I saw of them, they were sitting in an area at the base of the Rialto Bridge that isn't a busy sidewalk, but it's a place I've walked before to avoid crowds. I'd certainly avoid it if I saw someone having created a small campground.

They had laid all of their stuff out to brew a pot of coffee.

It was likely less about this couple and more about trying to prevent a pattern of behavior. People love to copy ideas for how to enjoy cities on the cheap. Imagine if 5 couples tried to enjoy the same spot in the same way at the same time. It would then become truly problematic.

I've never heard of this, and was never afraid to sit down in Venice.
Wraithorn · 51-55, M
@QuixoticSoul Ok, thanks for that.

They basically camped on a public bridge. Step up a camping stove etc.
FreeSpirit1 · 51-55, F
I went but it was flooded, I'll try again at a later date.

@Picklebobble2 Ah...so they have a problem with overcrowding basically. In that case I'll always stay well away from there. I can't stand crowds.
Thanks for that Pickle.
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@Wraithorn Bwahahaha oh yeah the crowds are no joke. The whole world comes to see that city.

Sounds very plausible. Venice is such a rip off city I guess this is just another way to fleece tourists of their money
UckfayOuyayOotay · 46-50, M
Brewing their own coffee outside in public? Who does that? And how?
Wraithorn · 51-55, M
@UckfayOuyayOotay I suppose that backpackers who are trying to keep holiday costs down could do that with a small portable gas stove thing.
HannahSky · F
Loitering is the only thing I can think of that would cause them a problem.
Venice is a crazy and expensive place so wouldn’t surprise me lol
smrlwrld · 22-25, M
That sounds crazy, I doubt it's true
