I Was Smacked At Primary School

Only once, a slap on a leg for saying or doing something impudent, I think. Physical punishment was rare in the schools I attended (South of England, county-council run, mixed, from 1950s-60s).

Smacking bare thighs was a pretty standard punishment in my infant school,5-7, this was in London in the late 50s.

Girls wore dresses and boys wore shorts, so it was quite easy for a teacher to smack an offending pupil. Smacks were given over the knee or while standing.

I do recall a boy receiving a hard smack in an echoing school hall, creating a very dramatic crack.

"That sounded just like a firework miss" commented a girl.

"I bet it felt like one" replied the teacher.

She was probably right!
