Smacked legs
At my primary school it was very common to receive a leg smacking for even minor offences.

I remember back to my school days 40 years ago. There was a girl in my class who must have had ADHD or some other behavioural disorder. She was immature for her age and unlike the other girls in her year who wore long skirts that were the fashion then with nylon tights, her skirt was shorter and she always wore white knee high socks. I remember her one day coming to school with a red hand mark on the back of her legs, obviously having just received a punishment.
A few weeks later while waiting for a bus at the bus station, she was with her mother at the front of the queue. The girl decided to sit on the barrier where the bus would come in, her mother told her to get down, but she ignored the instruction. Suddenly her mother grabbed her, pulled her off the barrier, lifted the hem of her skirt and gave her at least two hard slaps on the back of her legs. The girl grimaced as she was told that sitting there was dangerous.
On another occasion I saw her in a supermarket. She was pushing the trolley and decided to run down the aisle almost hitting another customer with the trolley. Her mother apologised to the lady her daughter almost ran into, before she turned to her daughter and once again gave her a telling off and a series of leg slaps in a public place.
Having seen these two incidents, it clearly appeared her mother deliberately dressed her daughter in a way she could readily administer this method of chastisement. If she had been dressed in a longer skirt and nylons like the other girls of her age such a punishment would be less effective to administer.
