Do not be afraid, be open eyed, open minded and explore. Are you going to Uni? A gap year to travel is something I always recommend if one can do it. One learns so much about life, about themselves, by doing that.
I felt the same way you did. What I didn't know at the time that becoming an adult and having freedom and my own choice is the best thing that ever happened to me.
