I wonder why is it widely believed that ppl end up elsewhere after they die?

It's a coping mechanism for the fear of death, been around as long as we have. It's why all religions were able to gain traction, they all tell you about the "afterlife" and how to get there.

I think it's because we see what happens to people's bodies after their deaths and the most obvious difference is that they (the essence of who they were) is no longer in them. So the eternal question has been, where does that essence or energy go ?
