I think it's because we see what happens to people's bodies after their deaths and the most obvious difference is that [b]they[/b] (the essence of who they were) is no longer in them. So the eternal question has been, where does that essence or energy go ?

@bijouxbroussard: I guess it is difficult to imagine ' essence ' just stoping and no longer being forever .
