Do you think 16yrs is too young to learn to drive a car. should the minimum age be brought up to 18yrs?

StormStrider · 46-50, M
Ive always thought that you should have to spend a year on a scooter or similar small engined motorbike before being allowed to learn to drive a car. Being one of the most vulnerable things on the road certainly makes you much more aware and that should then make you more aware as a car driver..it's just a theory..

I started to learn when I was 8, and but the time I was 12 I was driving solo all around the farm..
nothing like a bit of circle work for fun :)

@theoneyouwerewarnedabout: Another Aussie?.. :)
Yep, I've done my share of circle work in the past.. :D

I think it should be tied to your education level. Perhaps if you had to complete high school, far less people would drop out, and, very few kids at 16 are graduates

Well it's 15 back home, and I've been good with that. The bad to terrible driving I've seen doesn't seem to be disproportionately by young people: the reverse if anything, men age 25-45 seem to be much worse drivers than any other group.

What the US could do with, is Traffic officers - not police, but specifically and only tasked with enforcing traffic rules. It might get some of the fools on the road to actually stick to the laws a bit

NO!. The worst drivers in Australia are in the state of Victoria, and they don't get their license until age 18.

I think I'm a better driver for having learned younger.
16 is fine, once you turn 18 it's alot harder to learn imho especially of your folks give you the boot, not being able to drive a car is a pain these days

I got my licence at 29yrs. Lol
That sounds really annoying honestly 😅

@VampiricPersona: haha. I'm much different.. I'm like no one.. even for that 🤗

In the Netherlands you needed to be 18 to start taking lessons, but they lowered that to 17. You still need to be 18 to take your exam, but I think the old rules were better.
In my state they have a graduated license. At 16 they are limited to number of passengers and day light driving except for going to and from work.
times have changed ey!
how many older ppl can say they waited til they were legal before driving a car?..

I was 29

I learned it with 16 and look at me. Everyone drives worse than me...

Here it is 16 1/2 for a license and I got mine on that day. Never had a problem. Well ... there was that one time, but it wasn't my fault!
