Do you learn better being trained or doing it on the spot?

When I learned auto mechanics, it was on the spot, a crash course so to speak. Got my certs in 7 yrs, got a $5.00/hr raise & moved on to a better place

I learned everything myself.
I was a guard then a mechanic.😄
