Why some people are addicted to worshipping God

My mother in law worships so much, I become confused. If she will get some money then she will buy statue of God or visit temples. She have even spent so much of money for that. Once she even bought one baba ji type of person in house for rent thinking he is the incarnation of God. He didn't gave 5 months rent and had to forcely chase him out of the house. There should be huge changes after so much worship but instead she have drowned so much money of my father in law and even given so much money to other with 0 zero return and taken huge amount of money from other too plus unlimited debt. I wonder what's the use of those all worships if the situation haven't changed atall.
