@Abstraction Vergangenheitsbewältigung - they even have a word for it, and this word particularly is used in application to the nazi period as Germans have 'struggled to overcome the past'.
Interesting and disappointing that many of the current Israeli government leaders learnt a different lesson. Use your power to take land illegally from Palestinians. Systematically drive them out of neighbourhoods they live in - I think this is called ethnic cleansing everywhere else. Persecute in 1000 subtle ways to make life miserable and difficult to survive for those who aren't 'your people', making it difficult or impossible to make a living, see their relatives, take your fishing boat out far enough to catch anything... Cut off power and water randomly all the time. If they demonstrate peacefully, shoot. If someone throws a rock, shoot to kill. If a terrorist attacks, bomb civilians on a massive scale with air strikes. Block the supply of building materials for people to rebuild their homes after air strikes - let them live in ruins.
I'm a little disappointed, because I partly learnt to care about people because of the stories from so many Jewish people. That's what I do with my life, and that's why I've been in Palestine and seen this firsthand. Please note: I've said nothing antisemitic here, nor criticised Jewish people. Only government policy.
