Which areas should people avoid in new york at night if you're not familiar with the area?

Anywhere that's not retail or tourist oriented. Also, subways.

I’m from New York....but I wouldn’t go to any area of any large city that I was unfamiliar with unless I was with a group of people (and in some areas, it should be the right group of people).

I think im going to avoid big cities as much as humanly possible as it is from now on. They suck
