I mean, that was their general philosophy, they expected any generals to commit suicide rather than surrender. I saw a documentary recently where Hitler promoted one of his generals when the battle of Stalingrad was just about lost to field marshal to convince him to commit suicide rather than surrender (because he would have been the highest ranking German officer to surrender, which would be a disgrace). But he still surrendered!

@wildbill83 It was explained in a show called “Hunting Hitler”. Many declassified CIA filed show they were looking for him in the years after the war.
