Why? This is not to sound rhetorical...

Other than because, of course.

I can't go out and eat a meal, whether it be for lunch or dinner. Why? Because it's deemed as a non essential to my daily life. But, I can go to the liquor store and spend my entire afternoon. Why? Because New York State has deemed liquor stores as essential. Hey, I love my wine. I even have a fancy smancy wine cellar that holds five decades old fine wines. But, I in no manner perceive the wine store essential and an eatery as nonessential.

It's funny, everyone is being quarantined and encouraged to drink.

Why?

because it's currently deemed unsafe to be in anybody else's company for more than 6 feet for any length of time.

In a store, you're in and out. In a cafe/restaurant/bar you're likely to spend more time than is recommended safe

I suspect it has something to do with the danger of alcohol withdrawals. You don't want to cut off a bunch of alcoholics abruptly in the middle of a pandemic. Can you imagine?

Good thing I have a cellar full of wine (which shrunk a lot over the last 8 months)@Doomflower
Stock market. If it is too hard to predict the market, manipulate it so that it can be predictable.

Once the house is clean and responsibilities are handled, the liquor store seems kinda fun.
