Half the price of prescription drugs is for the "prescription" part. Compare prescription drugs that get downgraded to OTC and within a year or two the price drops to half or less.
If you find yourself in a border town along the Rio Grande and need a prescription filled, walk across the river and the price is 50% less.

@Heartlander I pay six fifty per prescription for the drugs on the health scheme in this country. Several are NOT on this scheme and I pay through the nose for them.

@Cavedweller You might want to check the prices in Mexico and Canada.
There was one particular prescription drug my wife was taking and they overnight raised the price from like $5 for a 30 day supply to like $2,500 for a 30 day supply. To make it more absurd, the drug was simply a combination of two popular OTC products. So rather than pay the $2,500, or even the $5, The same formula was available by buying 2 different OTC drugs for less than $1 each.
