As time draws near, if they haven't sold a percentage of those seats,say.....70%. They then discount the price either through their own company or sell off the remaining seats through a third-party at a discounted rate.
You should check the details as sometimes you have to board at odd destinations in order to take advantage of the lower fare. But for the most part it's good travel advice to book your ticket through a third party and compare with other third parties at the same time as you often find a huge discount as one company tries to outbid another.
