Is happiness just chemicals flowing through your brain or something more?

Obviously other stimuli get the endorphins going like our kids, partners, becoming suddenly wealthy, nature etc. Etc

Being somewhat of a spiritual nature I have to believe there's something more.
If it is chemicals what causes these chemicals and why do they make us happy opposed to sad? Seems like there's got to be some kind of external influence.
