do you get mad at the word retard?

One of the kids I do art with in the afternoon called my 9 year old a retard. Because she didn't know who AC/DC were. She simply got her stuff and went into the other room. Later on she cried because her friend in school has DS and how it must feel for her to be called that. I asked her did it bother her that she was called one? She said no because it's a made up word and nobody is one. I had a firm chat with the boy who called my cub that the next day.

Yes I have a sibling with down syndrome. I have had to get in a lot of fights over that word
