I think technology leads steals all of our attention & willpower, in essence limiting the quantity & quality of our time by distracting us from doing the things we want to do & also distracting us while we're doing the things we want to do.
Capitalism and tech innovation will reach a breaking point where the elites will no longer tolerate the welfare recipients they created. Utopia is an illusion.
I think it's palming off personal responsibility to say that technology "steals our attention and willpower." If a person doesn't do what they want/need to do because they're distracted by their computer then that's a personal issue. It's an issue of limited self control which exists with or without modern technology. We have higher IQ's than ever, we have lower teen pregnancy rates than ever, we have longer lifespans than ever... The list goes on and on. Modern technology is incredible and I'd say that most of us are too stupid to appreciate it fully (myself included.)
Hmm, I understand that there's agency in everything we do, but social media & technology are literally designed to steal & hold onto our attention, to make us feel bound to it. I don't know if I believe the statement that IQs are higher than ever because that's not something I see through people's lifestyles. Technology, at near every turn, is designed to make us dependent & reliant on it.
@Winterwanderer You don't have to believe me but you should believe the research: http://www.apa.org/monitor/2013/03/smarter.aspx
I don't believe that technology is designed to make us dependent. I believe we become dependent on it because it makes it easier for us to do what we want to do and we're inherently lazy.
