First one is always a practice anyway :)

It's all about timing. How long to let it sit before flipping? How hot is the griddle? How thick is the batter? Al those things come into play. Also, if your using a different stove it takes some getting used to also. I applaud your efforts, your a bigger person than me in that respect!

skillet overheated, I have the opposite problem, takes longer to cook the first batch and then need to turn the heat down or I'll burn the rest.

Pancake has to absorb the excess heat from the griddle. The second pancake is good.
