I hide my friends because I keep finding myself mutual friends with people who hate each other, and have been caught in the crossfire of wars before. I don't hide my replies, though.

If I make my way to your heart, it is simply because my words or my ways have done so. I do not toy with people. And you are certainly not the monster that your imagery with pitchforks casts. @SW-User I gather friends closely and carefully. I would never ask someone I cherish to choose between me and someone else. I don't have that right. No one should. Freedom is so important and so is choice. No one has ever said to me either choose or has mentioned we share people unliked. My circle has no gaps. It is tight. You must do what you think is correct for you. Perhaps I am of the kind of generation where we are not petty or squabble like unruly children.

@PoetryNEmotion Well you know, people have problems, people can be in rough places. Most of my friends are hurting for one reason or another, it's why I relate to them. God knows I've been in some bad states of mind. I'm not going to abandon them for it.
My circle is not tight, it's an open sprawling tangle of many very different people, which clearly has its drawbacks but I prefer it that way.
I have my activities open. I know a lot of those bullying others are hiding them. There might be other reasons, I mostly hear the one of being stalked. As for my friends list it's closed. Not for me, but for their reason as I don't want to hand them to those who follow me around with bad intentions. If my friends got their list open it's all fine by me, I'm not ashamed being friends with them.
Many hide theirs. When I ask why, they say it is because people harass them. Trolls. Stalkers. I like to follow my friends here around to see how they've answered. It is easy to know them better especially if we cannot chat on-line due to time zones or life circumstances.
When you hide, it makes it very hard on those that want to know you. Most do not have much of a profile to begin with.
Also when I reply to someone I look at their profile before hand. Just to see what kind of reply I should expect. If I do not know, then I might not reply at all. There are trolls here who hide their profiles as well. Hiding works both ways.
FWI I also do not block, mute nor filter. As well as being an "open book".
I always believed that honesty is always the best policy. And hiding is [b]"less than" [/b]honest.

Guys don't want anyone to see all the young women they're perving on and women don't want anyone to see all the perverted guys they talk to.... among other things..
I hid mine because several people were following me around and replying to my comments, and even getting in arguments at times. I've tried unhiding them again a few times, but it kept happening so I keep them hidden. :/
An attempt at mitigating drama. Hides who you might be talking to. Hides the posts you comment on from those actively trying to see what you are up to. I suppose it just adds another perceived layer of anonymity if you are wanting that.

I agree with @SW-User below, my interests and positions on mnay things, will irritate half my people, and why bother them with the idea that I am [u]the enemy[/u]

I don't - I can see some people not wanting others stalking them but since that's never been a problem for me I'm an open book
