I find it hard to understand

How not even a partner/lover etc. was able to save someone from suicide. Aren't they supposed to be their main emotional support. I guess when the relationship is sour then it makes sense.

This book might help "Night falls fast : Understanding Suicide " By KAY REDFIELD JAMISON. I too lost someone from suicide and this thing still haunts me.

Many times the person who commits suicide believes that they are hurtful or detrimental to their partner and/or society and that the most loving thing they can do is to remove themselves and their demons from their loved one's life.

Sometimes there is nothing anyone can do regardless of emotional support.

They may feel (due to mental illness) that they've failed their partner - that their partner would be better off without them or their personal pain/demons may be so great that nothing mitigates it
