@helenS I don't think society can be that black and white about such a thing anymore. It really has to be situation-specific.

@Subsumedpat yes...I was a deputy in a private all boys boarding/day school for boys aged 8-13 for over twenty years. It was not abolished in private schools until late 1999. It was only myself and the head (who did not use it) that was allowed to administer any form of cp. DUE to transport problems a whack on the bottom was the most common form of punishment.
Boys were put on report and had to line up outside my office at 4;15. Prior to lining up, boys had to go to the changing room, about 10 meters from my office and get undressed completely except for his underpants. They then had to wait in just pants outside my office and once the boy was outside my office he knew it was certain he was going to get his bottom whacked and nothing could prevent it. Most offences carried a standard punishment, and before I told them they knew what they were going to get. I was really just confirmation of if they were going to get the leather slipper or the cane and how many times they were going to be hit.Boys were always punished in front of others who were due punishment

We had the rule that the first time in a school year a boy was going to be whacked, he it with the leather slipper or cane he could keep his underpants on and was punished over them. A repeat visit that school year resulted in pants having to be removed and the punishment administered on his bare bottom.

With the slipper boys got between two and four whacks with two being the norm and the slipper was big enough, even for a 13 year old, to smack both cheeks with each whack. With the cane it was between 2 and 6 whacks, but if the head agreed it could be increased to 8 but never any more. In most cases 3 or 4 strokes was the norm. With 3 strokes I applied te first one right across the middle of his bottom, then one above and one below the first stroke. Four strokes were administered by two very close together in the middle area of his bottom then one above and one below these two. I aim was always to avoid strokes landing on top of each other. This was not easy with a boy of small build as the target areawas very small.. It was always easier if it was on the bare bottom as I could see where the first stroke had landed and made it easier to aim the rest.
