I Am a Believer In Education

Education is practical. It's about learning how the world actually is so that you can help to mould it be what you would like it to become. Without understanding and knowledge of facts (not the 'alternative' ones like in fairy tales) there can be no chance of working out how changes can be made to the status quo. Without understanding that water will always flow to the lowest point you'll never be able to work as a successful plumber - it's a fact and it's no good wishing it wouldn't when the sink overfows.

Education involves thinking. Thinking skills, like sporting skills need to be taught and practiced. Those who have better thinking skills than practical skills should not feel superior but understand that they need people who can put into practice the ideas they have. Those who have better practical skills than thinking need not be disdainful of those who can work through complex issues. The more we know, the richer life's experience can be and the fewer mistakes we make as a society.

Education is sometimes fun...sometimes hard work. Sadly it isn't always found in school which is as much about socialising kids as educating them.

Opinions not based on educated evidence are as worthless as celery is for body building.

I'd say (state) schools are more about inculcating compliance with the establishment.
