I was illiterate until I was nine years old. When I was finally taught to read, I didn't try reading a "grown up" book until I felt I was ready. The first book I ever read was "Mein Kampf" by Adolf Hitler. The second book I read was the bible. And I gotta tell you, there's a lot of very interesting, very fascinating, and very thought provoking stories in the bible. But for every tale like that, there's an equally disturbing immoral and utterly fucked up story in there too. And then there's shit that just didn't make sense, like the two or three bible books about taxation laws and how much interest you can charge your neighbor. It's extremely obvious how many different people wrote all the stories that make up the bible. So you really gotta use your good judgment to pick and choose what to take away. Tales of Jesus traveling to cities and teaching people not to ostracize others for their sicknesses or for being harlots or thieves? There's a lot to be learned from that. Stories about Ezekiel being teased as a child for being bald and summoning a herd of buffalo to trample the other children...not so much. You can ignore those stories.
Pardon my Pedantry, but it was Elijah at full age who said , "God damn you" to the children who were then devoured by 'two female bears'....

2nd Kings 2:24

There's no such thing as part of the Bible is true and the other part not. The Holy Spirit didn't have an "off" day.
Neither can God lie.

@JustaFriend: That's because the holy spirit didn't write the bible. It was written by several dozen people over a span of a couple thousand years. A good portion of it was written by Jews, which might explain why numerous books are nothing but financial laws and tax codes on how much interest you can charge your fellow Hebrew or when loan sharking is acceptable. Have you ever actually read the bible or do you just pretend it says whatever you want it to?
@BlueMetalChick: How did you miss these verses?

"All聽scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable (to man) for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness; that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished (equipped) unto all good works." II Timothy 3:16-17. That's 2nd Timothy, chapter three, verses 16-17:

"For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man; but holy men of God 聽spoke聽 as they were聽moved by the Holy Ghost".聽II Peter 1:21. 聽

The word "Bible" comes from the Greek word "biblos", which means book. The Bible is THE BOOK. There are many books in the world, but the Bible is the only one that has the right to be called "The Book". It is different than all other books. No other book has survived through the ages, nor printed for all throughout the world to read, than the Bible. The Bible is the only book on earth, where the author who died, is still alive. And shall be forevermore.

@JustaFriend: And I'm supposed to believe that god ordered children to be mauled by bears and for infants to have their heads caved in with rocks? As if I fuckin' believe that. Come on, use some common sense. People in the ancient world were out of the gourds. There were over 40 different people who wrote in the bible. You seriously believe every single word of it is truth directly from god? That's a whole new level of scary.

Muslims call their book "the book" too and they say it's the only one that deserves to be called so. Jews think the New Testament is bullshit. They think only their contributions are "the book." I'm not buying any of it.

All the authors of the bible are dead. Every last one of them. Y'know, because it's been millennia since it was written, duh.
I don't engage with people who speak to me in a disrespectful manner. Believe what you wish. It doesn't change God's Word nor the Truth of it. @BlueMetalChick:

I'm sure you don't. Reality getting in the way of your opinion must upset you so much. You know the cool thing about history? It doesn't give a flying fuck what you believe.

Of course not, my mother's been ashes for over 12 years. And even when she was alive, she had a worse mouth than I did! She's where I learned to talk so badly lol she was a crazy ass drunk all the time. I mean, she was still my mom, and we got along pretty good, but she was pretty messed up.
I'm sorry you lost your mom.

@JustaFriend: Yeah it wasn't easy. But I got to say goodbye to her, which helps. A lot of people never get to see a loved one before they die. I got to see her before she went and we enjoyed each other's company one last time, which gives me some closure. And I've still got my dad and my sister, and they're doing well.
@049AbjectTestament: Where did you get your understanding that I said the Bible lied about itself? Specifically. The first five books were written by Moses about 3,500 years ago. The last book was written by the apostle John, over 1900 years ago. God communicated with the Bible writers by means of the Holy Spirit.
@BlueMetalChick: I'm glad you got to say goodbye. I didn't with either of my parents.
