Atheists, if evolution is so good how come chickens have wings but are not able to fly? [Spirituality & Religion]

Doesn't that seem a bit strange?
SledgeHammer · 46-50, M
Um.... chickens CAN fly... just not long distances..🐓
Are you saying if evolution is wrong, god was doing the right thing designing a bird that can’t fly?
SinlessOnslaught · 26-30, M
@IndigoSavage @SirenCalledLuce Should I go to bed?
@SirenCalledLuce Oh Aubrey..you can steep my tea any day.
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
If prayers work why do we have hospitals?
IndigoSavage · 22-25, F
@MrBrownstone maybe some people prayed for hospitals and so now we have hospitals. You're welcome
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
@IndigoSavage So you can have a doctor fix you instead of god. You are welcome
chrisCA · M
@MrBrownstone And mass shootings.
dogs chase cars they can't drive, men flirt with women they can't have. it's life
SledgeHammer · 46-50, M
@saragoodtimes rofl....
(smh)
Sharon · F
@MrBrownstone ...and I don't need the threat of eternal damnation to have those qualities either.
Disposal · 36-40, M
Evolution is better than a sentient being that others called and pray for a god that never really done anything for humanity except for creating a misplacement of faith and hate that the real truth is that the creators of religion play upon the folly of men's stupidity that makes them wealthy than doing actual good
Zeusdelight · 61-69, M
@Disposal And you call religious people narrow minded:)
NCCindy · 36-40, F
Well ... the fact that they have wings caused humans to breed them in large quantity to they would have enough wings to fry and coat with hot sauce and ranch dressing to be consumed during football games.

Chickens have been amazingly successful at passing their genes on to more and more of the next generation !!!

Just imagine how few chickens there would be otherwise !!!
Evolution is terrible it's random mutations over billions of years why the hell do we breathe out of the same hole we eat with?? Horrible design xD
@MrBlueGuy Yeah! .........and why is the recreation area right next to the sewage plant?

Some people have a brain, but just don't have a mind to use it.

Some people have legs, but they only ever choose to crawl.

Maybe chickens can fly, but they're just too chicken to try. 🤷‍♂️
Tastyfrzz · 61-69, M
There is natural selection and non-natural selection. Corn and chickens are examples of living things developed to be far different from their original state. Humans also have evolved unaturally. We need shoes, clothes, and glasses to survive in all but a select few natural environments. How many people could survive a winter in Minnesota without clothes?
chrisCA · M
@Tastyfrzz To a point. Humans evolved in intellect so we could create shoes, clothing, and shelters in order to live in harsh environments. You are right though. Without clothing, humans would have been confined to the continent of Africa.
How does the religious have brains that they can't use? 😁
Powderflask · 31-35, M
Or emus or penguins. Flightless club 🤘🏻
SatanBurger · 36-40, F
I could ask the same thing about god. If god is so good how come chickens have wings but are not able to fly. I mean he did design stuff didn't he according to your principals.
An evolutionary need to not fly, therefore the muscles needing to not develop over time. A lot animals that are raised in captivity, even birds that can fly in nature, won’t develop those muscles. My friend has an African grey that can’t fly because it’s previous owners didn’t provide the need/environment. Span that same treatment over a few generation and then the muscle is gone.
newjaninev2 · 56-60, F
@MorbidCynic close, but that’s a Lamarckian view of evolution, whereas the answer lies in artificial selection by humans.

It’s much the same as chihuahua dogs, despite being wolves, simply wouldn’t survive in the wild
chrisCA · M
@newjaninev2 True. Without the protection of their owners, all smaller dog breeds would soon disappear. The coyotes around here would play a part.
@newjaninev2 I was just going off a guess. I really don’t care lol
God in His great wisdom and kindness realized that Colonel Sanders couldn't run very fast.
@puck61 Why didn't he make sanders faster then? Chickens came millions of years before him after all.
@NerdyPotato Alas, we live in a fallen world.
Tobasco · 31-35, F
Probably because they're ground dwelling birds that don't need to fly since they're adapted to living on the ground
First off anyone who has actually had chickens or anyone who can google will tell you chickens can fly.

As for why they rarely can in modern farming that is simple.

Any creature kept in captivity and fattened up for food production would have mobility issues.

If you were confined and hooked up to a feeding tube you would eventually be unable to walk.

Not sure where you are going with this.
adorbz · 26-30, F
genuinely thought this was a parody question at first 😆
@adorbz me too!
JP1119 · 36-40, M
I’m a Baptist, but evolution isn’t always “good” and doesn’t always produce individuals that are well suited to their environments. Are you aware that the chicken is the closest surviving relative of the T-Rex? My brother explained it to me thusly: Since the dinosaurs were killed off by the air being full of dust, the T-Rexes that were most likely to survive were the smallest ones and the ones most amenable to eating vegetables instead of meat (also, in general it’s often true that small animals are better at surviving than large animals are). Flying would not be a skill it would need because if it gets too high up in the air it would get poisoned and die. My brother is my only source on this and he doesn’t really have any particular archaeological credentials, but it made sense to me.
newjaninev2 · 56-60, F
@JP1119
individuals that are well suited to their environments
Bear in mind that ‘well-suited’ refers to advantage in replication, and that the environment is constantly changing... so the replicative advantage might not endure for long.

In the changed environment, other genes might have a replicative advantage. It’s the constantly changing interaction between genes and the environment in which they find themselves that drives evolution.

Genes march backwards into the future 😀

It should also be noted that it’s not individuals who matter... it’s their genes, and the replication of those genes. I am merely an escape pod for my parents’ genes, and my daughter is merely an escape pod for my own genes (and her father’s genes). Having built an escape pod, my genes will now happily leave me behind to die.
AntisocialTroll · 56-60, F
Chickens can't fly because people clip their wings...
Kwek00 · 41-45, M
Not sure where you live? But if you don't cut their wings, they won't stay inside the fence unless you put a roof on it. They just aren't build for longer flights.

Kwek00 · 41-45, M
@newjaninev2 I don't know annyone in my region that doesn't cut the wings of their chickens. It's either that, or building an actual coop. Else they'll just be all over the place, unless there is a rooster, then they'll just be where the rooster is.
Bushmanoz · 56-60, M
@Kwek00 witchcraft!
Kwek00 · 41-45, M
@Bushmanoz Nah, it's evolution baby. After another 1000 years they'll be flying south for winter.
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
Because over many years of domestication, we have breed them to have heavy meaty bodies compared to their wings and they are now unable to fly very far. Their wild ancestors could fly.
newjaninev2 · 56-60, F
Of course chickens can fly
@Bushmanoz "This, in my opinion, is a mistake in evolution. Therefore it must have been God. ...to have made... that mistake. Wait, where was I going with this?" 😂
newjaninev2 · 56-60, F
@Bushmanoz surely not!

Mind you, I once ran across a creationist who thought men had one less rib than women. 😂
Bushmanoz · 56-60, M
@newjaninev2 lol Seriously?
GLITTER · 36-40, F
Because the wings are the tastiest part of a chicken 🤔
@GLITTER mmmmm :))))
GerOttman · 61-69, M
Ya know, you could ask the same question of a creationist...
EuphoricTurtle · 41-45, M
Nope, not strange at all. Just like all the other flightless birds.
Sharon · F
If "god" created them, he's a piss poor engineer.
Jake966 · 56-60, M
Chickens do fly
Powderflask · 31-35, M
@Jake966 similar thoughts. I wouldn’t call it “flying” like hummingbirds do but yeah chickens can get pretty high.
chrisCA · M
Most chickens are raised on factory farms, in controlled environments, with no natural predators.
They are bred for a purpose.
Evolution does not happen.

Why does the recurrent laryngeal nerve which runs from the brain to the larynx on a giraffe run all the way down the neck, loop around an artery in the chest and back up instead of just going from the brain to the larynx?
Bushmanoz · 56-60, M
(they can fly)
How come women have pussies but don't eat Whiskas?
