Why is Jesus always depicted as white skin and blue eyes if he was born in Jerusalem? [Spirituality & Religion]

Aren't people from that region generally tanned skin and brown eyes???

Probably because white people did the art maybe? Who knows. I would imagine he's dark skinned with brown eyes. I also imagine he wasn't really born December 25th, either

Popular Mechanics had an article several years ago that was a forensic recreation of what Jesus probably really looked like. Apparently his racial type were all so similar in appearance that the Romans could not tell Jesus apart from his disciples when they came to Gethsemane to arrest him.

The forensic scientist found a skull from a burial at around the same time that Jesus lived, from the same area, and fleshed it out. The photo of the forensic recreation is a little bit shocking for people who are accustomed to seeing Caucasian white skinned Jesus paintings.

I am deeply interested in Jesus actual appearance, so, using the forensic study, and hair and beard styles that were common at the time, I've done a drawing that may be similar to Jesus's true appearance. I added some very charismatic eyes, because I don't think he would have been so effective if he had not had compelling eyes.

It's on my ID home page, if you would like to see it. I plan to do a painting eventually, but I don't want it to be formal and stiff, so I am thinking about it.

@4meAndyou I imagine you could be right about the eyes

@JovialPlutonian I made his face a lot thinner than the forensic study, and made his hair more similar to what was actually worn at the time. The Jews of his period did not wear long hair. Their hair cuts mimicked that of the Greeks. They felt it was an abomination to wear long hair. They also did not trim their beards, much like the beards of Hassidic Jews.

Jewish men also wore a traditional wrap called a himation, trimmed at the bottom with fringe, and the clothing of the common man, which Jesus would have worn, would have been hand woven natural fiber similar to coarse woven linen. It was not dyed.

A famous Roman scholar and writer actually SAW Jesus in person, and said that he looked nothing like a King, but was dressed very poorly and had the appearance of a beggar.

I think, also, that Jesus would have been very thin, because he walked constantly and preached and relied on food donations in a time when people didn't have a lot to share.

@4meAndyou FYI, the guard that arrested Jesus probably wasn't Roman but you are correct in that they didn't recognize him.

The Europeans couldn’t tolerate the fact that Jesus wasn’t white

@SW-User HE IS NOT! lol

When I was a teenager I´ve seen once a plate where Jesus was painted as a black coloured man. And although we all know that Jesus was no African it was nevertheless a very interesting view of ethnicity. I´ve never forgotten this painture. 🧔🏿
You're so right, it all wishful thinking. No one really knows what he looked like, he had a small following and much of his "teachings" were stories handed down over the years and a lot of what he supposedly said are wrong!

One of my favorite Christmas songs is Some Children See Him. Part of the lyrics go

"The children in each different place
Will see the Baby Jesus face
Like theirs but bright with heavenly grace
And lit with holy light."
JovialPlutonian · 36-40, M
@MasterDvdC and blue eyes with white skin la la la 🤣
MasterDvdC · 61-69, M
@JovialPlutonian No. Pull it up. The rest of that verse (which is the last) says

"So lay aside each earthly thing
And with your heart as offering
Come kneel beside this infant king
'Tis love that's born tonight."

The other verses talk about just about every skin tone as being used to picture Christ.

@Mountainlady16 lol shows how much I care 🤷‍♂️

Still think it's all fiction

The line of David was Norwegian.

My favorite portrayal does look more middle-eastern and has his head thrown back laughing.
