I Want to Disappear and Start Over

Japan would be a good place to move to in my opinion.

No small talk with strangers ever, a culture that promotes a focused and efficient work ethic, and vending machines everywhere!

Only a few more years beloved Nippon!

Nippon! Banzai!

That said, just do your research. There's also overwork, never being considered one of them, always a gaijin, being talked down to like, "OH WOW YOU KNOW A WORD IN JAPANESE???" even when you speak it fluently, and a lot of passive aggression. I mean, you're gonna have to communicate, eventually.

And likely a lot of other stuff.

End of the day, the Japanese are also people. And the average person is still a douchebag.

@Tatsumi Well I may be a gaijin, but since I'm asian--and there's quite a lot of people from my country over there, maybe I could blend in a little?

But TBH you really have a point, a lot asians are racist in the sense that we prefer to deal with people from our own countries. Even us Filipinos can have moments I'm ashamed of, even though foreigners say we're quite polite and hospitable.

@theThrowawayProject Ahhh, that would make it easier, true. I didn't see you were from the philippines. I was taught Fillipino martial arts, as a kid, by a 9th degree black belt. :D Though, I forgot most of it. Formed from farm tools and such when martial arts was outlawed a long time ago or something, if I recall.

Though, I wouldn't say racist. Everyone has a sort of innate preference for their own group. Humans like sameness. Racism would be *hating* someone, just because they are a different race, not just a preference for same-group.

And, for the Japanese, I think that passive aggression mostly stems from attempts to be polite, too. They just force it too hard, sometimes, imo. And make too many assumptions, but that's basically everyone.

But, Nippon is a great country.

@Tatsumi Woahhhh that's awesome! Arnis is our national sport now in case you didn't know.

As for your explanation on sameness, that makes complete sense! I mean we like to joke around with stereotypes--both national and regional, but I'm now aware that it's all in good fun and without a thought of hate and self-superiority.

As for the Japanese, their politeness has certainly paid off--because we've certainly moved on from the war and hold them in high regards. A great nation indeed.

Arigato gozaimasu!

@theThrowawayProject Oh, awesome. :D I might have to watch some of it. I wish I remembered what I was taught, heh. I only remember some of the stick amd hand-to-hand moves. It's good to know what it's called!

Yeeah. If it's done in fun, I think that's how people get closer, rather than trying to create this shaky invisible barrier where everyone is stepping on eggshells and too busy worrying about offending someone, rather than just having fun and bonding. To an extent, of course.

Oh, absolutely. Japan has come a long way. If only people in the U.S. were as polite!

Iya, iya. Mondainai. ^^
