I Love Wikipedia

Having some good clean fun online is to read up on the history of common everyday objects ..... lighters for example:
The first lighters were converted flintlock pistols that used gunpowder. One of the first lighters was invented by the German chemist named Johann Wolfgang Döbereiner in 1823 and was often called Döbereiner's lamp.[1] This lighter worked by passing flammable hydrogen gas, produced within the lighter by a chemical reaction, over a platinum metal catalyst which in turn caused it to ignite and give off a great amount of heat and light.[1]
Sure glad the modern lighter is more streamlined......:)

Fascinating! I haven't had a lighter since I gave up smoking... in 1998.

Interesting, thanks. I love fire and have ordered myself a flint stone online. I was fascinated to read about pyrophoric metals (courtsey wikipedia). But hydrogen? I never knew that!
