what does being a "liberal" really meant?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberalism

here's a wiki, but has its lost its true meaning in today's society? why silence freedom of speech when its about speaking one's mind?
I've said it a thousand times, but I've never had any beef with 'liberals', it is these pseudo liberals who have hijacked the name, 'liberal' that I see as a social cancer. This bizarre ideology fomenting on the left is what I have referred to as a "petri dish of pure evil" and I stand by that.
Liberals have historically been behind legislation that has benefited all Americans on both sides of the aisle.
THESE ARE NOT SNOWFLAKES!

@puck61: Well hell might have just frozen over a little as I certainly do agree with your take on the people in those videos. The majority of these people seem to be college students with very little, if any real world experience.

They are so passionate and thats great, we need passionate people, but we need them to actually channel that energy into pursuits that can change the world for the better.

Screaming at people with megaphones who are yelling crap doesn't help, chanting anti-police rhetoric doesn't help, screaming "fuck the police" in your safe college arena doesn't help.

Sad part is, these kids aren't stupid, I don't understand how they think those kinds of things help.

@Pherick: perhaps the subliminal brainwashing has been the caused...by a more sinister present version of totalitarian douche bags...

@Greenbare: You really have a problem with conspiracy theories ... How do I know your posts aren't written and edited by liberals???

Its really about the two parties and mindsets here in the US being so polarized. Its fine if what exactly a conservative and what a liberal means changes. Society changes, so it makes sense these terms change.

However when you can't come together in the middle, when your two parties just seem to want the exetremes, then you aren't going to make much progress.

@Pherick: "when two parties just want the extremes..." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horseshoe_theory

@nurseVneck: I certainly understand the idea, just not sure how well I see it working in practice. I mean if we made lists of what the extreme right and the extreme right want, I can't imagine them being closer to what the middle wants?

Classical liberalism and the modern concept of liberal aren't really related.

When people say liberal vs conservative, they're characterizing a liberal as progressive, and in favour of tax & spend policies, a strong welfare state, and at least moderate redistribution of wealth - while remaining fundamentally capitalist. And usually voting Democrat. It's a very American term.

Classical liberalism is about the ideas of individualism, equality, and various civil liberties and was a reaction to monarchies and other hierarchical societies. Pretty much all mainstream American political groups at least pretend to be liberal in that sense.

Socrates was critical of democracy saying that it is only ever as good as the education that surrounds it

"Dictatorship naturally arises out of democracy, and the most aggravated form of tyranny and slavery out of the most extreme liberty" - Plato

@xSharp: sounds like a subliminal message is hidden in Big Brother's messages...

ps: i still hate totalitarianism
Pherick · 41-45, M
@xSharp: Who was it that said: "Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the others." Churchhill I think was credited for it ... :)

@nurseVneck: its a bit older than that..

I'm a liberal, and I'm all in favor of free speech; however, money does not equal speech, otherwise the rich get a much larger voice than the poor and middle class. What makes you think liberals are against free speech?
quinnVneck · 31-35, F
@JP1119: SJWs, feminists, maybe even the Black Lives Matter movement, etc...and oh Political correctness in the books and the "extreme sensitivity" of the left wing towards anything that might offend them, even the sight of female protagonists in video games. i mean no offense but liberalism in today's society kind of got its mean sort of displaced... i also recently saw a video that pretty much made a lot of right wing cringe: the classroom thing that states "might be future of education" where Privilege points are rewarded to the "outcast" [more of special snowflake]

this new form of liberalism is clouding the true meaning of being liberal and i certainly am against anything totalitarian in nature

@JP1119: but my answer may not prove to be enough...try looking @puck61's answer down below
People are stupid, don't bother.

@untamedfyre: i guess perhaps they are...or maybe misguided by misinformatiion
@nurseVneck: They'd rather be 'right' than challenge their existing beliefs.
