Was Donald Trump the "Great White Hope"?

I have been doing a lot of reading about Jack Johnson and the push to defeat him because he was black. I see a lot of parallels in attitude to the 2016 presidential election. After Obama, were those on the Right hoping to restore some kind of "white normalcy" to the presidency when they nominated and elected Trump? It seems they still are pushing for this by their continued support of him - like they feel that the USA can go in a positive direction if only a white male is in charge.

"The Great White Dope"
That’s exactly what it was. Even the language used “make America great again” (some folks came right out and said “take our country back” as if Obama hadn’t been legally elected).

Swap the 'h' in Hope for a D.
