I'm interested in Otpor

My wife is from Venezuela. Nothing has changed since it stopped making international news. I don't recognize the stick figures that are my in-laws and that's been going on for almost 10 years now!
So why does one place with a very short history of democracy come up with a student protest movement, with an ugly name and after 2 short years, leads to the bloodless overthrow of a dictatorship and another place with entrenched democracy tolerates starvation at the hands of a.dictator? From what I understand, the Serbian people weren't short on food. I don't think that they were short on anything except democracy--the sort of thing no one really needs until other needs are not getting met. But the people of Venezuela don't even get to eat and somehow that dumbass bus driver manages to keep the police and armed forces on side. I'd love to know how the Serbs did it.

Many South American people are idealistic and communism appeals the the dreamy idealistic mindset.. It's sad but it was easy for the socialists to lead the Venezuelan people into starvation and dictatorship because the Venezuelan people WANT to believe the lie of the Socialist utopia..

It's easy to fall into socialism but it is very very hard to get out of socialism because socialism needs to quickly transform into a brutal dictatorship to keep going.. It took the Russians 73 years before they could get out of their socialist nightmare.. The North Koreans have been in their socialist nightmare for 72 years and there i no sign fat boy Kim is going to be kicked out of power any time soon.. So don't expect Venezuela to free themselves from the evil of socialism any time soon..

One thing that Venezuela has not been as effective with compared to the old USSR and now North Korea is they are not as good as keeping their people locked into their country.. Millions of Venezuelans have been able to escape over the border to other countries.. So at least those who are capable and desire to live free have a better chance to escape Venezuelan then North Koreans..
@Adstar socialism was entrenched in Serbia but democracy was new. Socialism was is new in Venezuela but democratically was entrenched

@ImperialAerosolKidFromEP Serbia and as a whole the former Yugoslavia was linked culturally to Russia. So what Russia did Serbia was soon to follow.. Once Socialism died in Russia and dictatorship that was linked with it fell the Serbs and other slavic nations naturally went the same way..

Of course democracy in Russia is not one of the best examples of democracy.. Good democracy is dying all over the world now..

Oh and democracies can vote in leftist socialists to power.. Just look at the current day USA with the communist Kamala Harris as the new vice president with a senile over aged president that should be in an elderly care hoe rather then the white house.. Will he still be president in 4 years time? Most people doubt it.. He will be declared unfit to rule and commie Kamala will become presedent of the USA for sure..
@Adstar I don't think political flavouring has anything to do with it. Dictatorships have variety, but I don't think it's got anything to do with it being left or right. Milosevic was a seasoned dictator who managed to keep a fair bit of stability in his country but couldn't hold onto power anyway. Maduro is an unedumacated bus driver whose managed to make a huge mess, but still holds onto power. So the only thing to be gleaned from that is: there's no simple answer
