To decide the matchups, candidates' names were drawn manually at NBC News’ headquarters at 30 Rockefeller Plaza in New York. One representative of each of the qualifying campaigns was invited to attend the draw along with officials from the Democratic National Committee. Campaign representatives saw their respective candidate’s paper slip with their name on it before it was folded and placed inside the box.
What a lame way of chosing the lineup.

No ping-pong balls in a hopper?

Or a Pin the Tail on the Donkey contest?

Too many candidates. They would do better having more debates with a smaller stage.
I'm sure the questions will be given to the one they want to look good ahead of time. Just like the last time around.
If you ain't cheatin you ain't tryin
Choosing who participates by looking at polling information seems fair. Dicing into two groups over two days seems fair. Choosing which candidates compete on day 1 versus day 2 is necessary, and it seems silly to put much thought into it--random assignment is good enough for me.

Will anybody be watching?

It's more of an entertainment event than a debate.

I watched a number of the GOP debates in 2016. Not because I thought I was going to learn much about the candidates I didn't already know.

But was hopeful at some point one of them would provoke Trump into a nervous breadkdown. 😂

Seriously. You can learn much about a candidate with 60 second canned answers. You're better off reading their website for 30 minutes.
How about chimps throwing darts ? 🎯
