The market should work for humanity, not the other way around.
@Burnley123 I think you object to the cult of the market, as do I -- but that is not an endorsement of socialism.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@beckychandler It depends what you mean by socialism. I don't support a soviet style system and I never have.

Capitalism over everything.

Do you prefer railways trains or Apples? Democracy is a voting system. Not a political philosophy. Capitalism , like so many other things, is great in theory, until someone comes along and messes with a finely balanced system by introducing people into the mix. Greed, laziness and hunger for power screw up any system that is not properly regulated.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@Brianthesnail Totally agree. Communism doesnt allow for humans differing levels of ability , competitive nature and the desire for reward to match ability. Where Capitalism overlooks areas of community benefit, requiring a direct profit reward to undertake a project. This is exactly why a hybrid system with Socialist elements is the right compromise.
Brianthesnail · 56-60, M
@whowasthatmaskedman well, my greatest objection to neoliberalism is the assumption that competition is a basic human characteristic
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@Brianthesnail Its not universal. But it has contributed to making us the apex predator on the planet
Brianthesnail · 56-60, M
Interesting the way the question is phrased. It is not asking to choose one at the expense of the other but which should be more in control
Brianthesnail · 56-60, M
@TrashCat
Keynes or Friedman ?
TrashCat · M
@Brianthesnail Friedman...Hands down
Brianthesnail · 56-60, M
I lean towards Keynes
Both are liberal enlightenment theories. Democracy is political and Capitalism is economic. It has become poplar in the post-war liberal era to talk about "democratic capitalism"

Democracy often becomes a cult of proceduralism. As Pope John Paul II wrote:

“Democracy cannot be idolized to the point of making it a substitute for morality or a panacea for immorality....Fundamentally, democracy is a system and as such is a means and not an end. Its moral value is not automatic, but depends on conformity to the moral law.”

Something similar can be said of Capitalism.

Democracy. I thought this question was rather obvious but I see a lot of people saying capitalism...
The two are not in opposition.
TrashCat · M
@PrivateHell Capitalism is not a political system
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@PrivateHell The needs of each frequently are, when you think about it.

Just like in communisim, neither ever occur in a natural form and it's why neither work as designed.
Hm. No bulge.
